Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Sunday will visit La Macarena, the town closest to the jungle rebel camp where top FARC guerrilla leader “Mono Jojoy,” was killed earlier this week by military air strikes.
Santos “will visit La Macarena, in Meta [department], where he will salute and thank the armed forces that took part in ‘Operation Sodom’ which culminated in the death of ‘Jojoy,'” the President’s Office said in a statement.
Santos’ visit to the jungle town is planned for 11AM.
According to Caracol Radio, rigid security will be in place in the town of La Macarena to prevent incidents while the president is present. The FARC is considered to have a strong presence in the area surrounding the town, located approximately 60 miles from where Mono Jojoy was bombed to death.
Santos’ visit to La Macarena is the first after his return on Saturday from New York where he spoke before the U.N. General Assembly and met with U.S. President Barack Obama.
Defense Minister Rodrigo Rivera, who described the camp where Mono Jojoy died as “the mother of all FARC bases,” visited La Macarena on Friday already.
