Santos signs equality law for female wages

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos signed a bill Wednesday that eliminates wage discrimination against women.

“I just enacted this law which will eliminate discrimination that exists today against women with regards to pay. Studies indicate that for equal work in the country, last year, women were earning an average of 20% less [than men],” said Santos from Cartagena.

The head of state stressed that the government ultimately seeks to end gender discrimination and will do everything possible to make it so.

“I am very pleased, especially what positive news [this is] for women, that such discrimination is eliminated with this law I have just sanctioned. I’ve directed the Ministry of Labor to be very rigorous in monitoring and implementing this law against wage discrimination towards women,” Santos concluded.
