A Partido de La U congressman said Tuesday that he suspects that recent actions by the FARC indicate that the guerilla organization favors Green Party candidate Antanas Mockus to win the upcoming presidential elections.
Armando Benedetti, a firm supporter of presidential hopeful Juan Manuel Santos, said that he feels “strange” over the recent behavior of the FARC, which he sees as unusually “passive” in the face of an upcoming presidential election, according to a press release on his website.
This passivity, he considers, is attributed to the notion that the FARC would find it “convenient for Mockus to be president,” and that the guerrilla group is already “surely convinced that Mockus will be president.”
However, the Senator went on to add that he thinks Mockus is an intelligent person who would not be “seduced” or fooled by the guerrillas.
The Senator also commented on interference in the Colombian electoral process by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who is accused of trying to skew the election towards Mockus.
To this, Benedetti remarked that Colombian “citizens are not stupid, and will not fall for the threats, and for that, they will freely choose at the polls” on election day on May 30.
