A few kilometres outside the picturesque colonial town of Villa de Leyva, Boyaca lies a prehistoric theme park that plays home to 52 of the 311 species of dinosaurs which once existed. Visitors to ‘The Great Valley’ can “feed” a pterodactyl or a brontosaurus, as well as interact with their natural habitats such as forests, deserts and christalline lakes.
The 35 hectare park is the creation of special effects technician, Bernard Salamanca who has overseen the running of the park since it opened last December. When fully completed, Salamanca hopes to have 150 replicas which, thanks to a combination of painstaking scientific study and animatronic technology, offer visitors an accurate, full-scale picture of the animals as they existed 65 million years ago. Aside from a learning experience offered through the interactive excavation area, visitors to the park can enjoy a number of fun attractions such as a maze, kids zone, puppet shows and woolley mammoth rides and the opening of 3D cinema and museum shortly on the way.
The park in the region’s most ambitious project and looks set to also be one of its most successful. It offers a great day out for all generations and interests.
