The road to the beautiful church that crowns the city of Bogota will open as scheduled in the last week of September, W Radio reported Monday.
The Cerro de Monserrate hosts thousands of visitors a day, ranging from worshipers, hikers, and tourists. But transportation to the summit is limited. Currently, the only means to arrive at the church are by cable car, funicular, or hike.
The main construction of the road is complete, but the city is also planning to make the road an ecological and educational path that will enlighten travelers, similar to a Botanical Garden.
Father Jaime Mancera, the rector of the Monserrate, explained that construction has been ongoing for eight months and is successfully keeping up with the timetable set by the city.
The only hindrance to the completion of the project is the government’s agency in charge of executing its environmental planning and protectionism policies, the Autonomous Regional Corporation of Cundinamarca (CAR). The CAR has set requirements to properly handle the effects of the influx of more tourists, including waste management.
