A delegation of trade unionists and British congressmen found the remains of 2,000 unidentified people buried in Macarena cemetery in the department of Meta .
Jairo Ramirez, a spokesman for the Permanent Committee for Human Rights, announced the discovery Thursday. He warned that forced disappearances are still happening in Colombia, Caracol Radio reported Thursday.
“There are about 2,000 anonymous victims in the cemetery of La Macarena, many of which were placed here in 2009. This is a policy which continues, particularly in areas with a revival of military activity,” he said.
Ramirez said that it appears that many of the remains were recently interred.
The spokesman added that the Justice and Peace Law is inadequate and lacks the resources to ensure the identification and delivery of the remains to their families.
“The Law of Justice and Peace [is] a toothless law that has failed to bring about a public policy to allow exhumation, because there is no money to hire forensic experts, anthropologists and technicians carry out an exhumation,” Ramirez said.
