National Electoral Council magistrate Joaquin Jose Vives formally asked
his eight colleagues to formulate the charges against the organizers of
a referendum for a re-election of Colombian President Alvaro Uribe,
local media reported Wednesday.
According to the magistrate, the referendum allowed violations of the maximum amount of money sponsors could donate to finance the initiative and therefore did not comply with the rules and regulations of a referendum.
The organizers of the referendum had admitted to the National Registry that some of its sponsors paid more for the initiative than legally allowed.
The National Electoral Council will meet July 14 to discuss the request of its magistrate.
The re-election of Uribe is facing several set backs; the Supreme Court is investigating all 86 coalition Representatives for allegedly illegally approving a second referendum, while the preceeding one hadn’t been approved by the Electoral Council yet.
