The accusations that the referendum to re-elect Colombian President
Álvaro Uribe was organized fraudulently are serious, Interior and
Justice Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio said.
Colombia’s Senate, Prosecutor General and Electoral Council all want to question David Murcia after he admitted to have spent US$2 million on the logistics of the referendum. Murcia’s company DMG is investigated for laundering money for drug traffickers and defrauded hundreds of thousands of Colombians who put their savings in his investment company.
“We are going to wait on what the authorities say. It really is a serious matter. One can not hide that,” the Minister told Caracol Noticias Friday.
Obviously there must be a thorough investigation and draw conclusion,” Valencia Cossio added.
Murcia’s lawyer says his client has “videos and other evidence” to proof he helped the recollection of signatures gathered in teh referendum.
The referendum, held in 2008, is investigated by several bodies for allegedly illegally funding the operation. The National Registry is investigating possible leaks to the referendum organizers within the organization.
