The head of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Colombia (ICRC) promised Thursday to assist former senator and hostage mediator Piedad Cordoba with the release of FARC hostages.
Christophe Beney, the director of ICRC, said that the process of release of the hostages will be slow.
“I’m not pessimistic at all, but I remember, for example, that two years ago in the release of 2010 the talks began in July 2009, and we will take things carefully, effectively, as a positive step, but obviously there is much work to do before these intentions materialize.”
Beney’s comment refers to Wednesday’s announcement from former the senator that within weeks she will have news on the release of 21 members of the security forces held by the FARC guerrilla group.
The Red Cross helped facilitating previous hostage releases by Colombia’s largest rebel group.
