Quindio, Millonarios win in Copa Mustang

Colombia news - Millonarios

Sunday’s soccer action in the Colombian Copa Mustang II offered several
surprises with Quindio beating Tolima while Millonarios defeated
Atletico Junior.

Quindio lead the tournament following a surprising 1-4 victory at Tolima. Dany Santoya and Carlos Rodas put the visitors ahead in the second half, although Milton Rodriguez got one back in minute 37. Second-half goals from Feiver Mercado and Alexander Mejia ended Tolima’s aspirations however.

Two weeks after losing the Copa Mustang I final, Junior didn’t seem to have fully recovered as the Sharks lost 3-1 at Millonarios in Bogota. Ruben Bustos made it 1-0 early on and although Luis Ruiz equalised in the 39th minute, Carmelo Valencia restored the home side’s lead four minutes later. A free kick from Bustos set the score to 3-1 six minutes after the break.

Atletico Huila got off to a good start with a 2-3 win at Boyaca Chico. The hosts did score the opener through Anthony Tapia in the 4th minute but goals from Hernan Cordoba and Jorge Vidal earned Huila a 1-2 lead at half time. Ivan Velasquez added a third in the 70th minute. Although Facundo Bombin got one back for the Tunja outfit eight minutes later, Huila held on to their lead to earn three valuable points.

Independiente Medellin began their season with a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Pasto. Hugo Centurion gave the home side a lead on 29 minutes but had his goal canceled out by Luis Mosquere in the 57th. The winning goal came near full time and was scored by Carlos Hidalgo.

Real Cartagena collected their first three points with a 1-0 over Santa Fe. The only goal of the match was scored by Jose Najera in the 20th minute.

Deportivo Cali and Envigado held each other to a 2-2 draw at Pascual Guerrero stadium, and the hosts will be the happier side to have earned a point. Envigado took an early 0-2 lead with goals from Jamell Ramos and Carlos Alvarez, but Luis Valencia scored one back in the 34th minute. Three minutes into added time, it was Duvan Hernandez to level the score, 2-2.

Quindo are the first leaders of the Copa Mustang II, ahead of Millonarios, Huila, Pasto, Cartagena and Once Caldas.
