Advisers of new U.S. President-elect Barack Obama will meet with the
major human rights organizations active in Colombia, Colombian
opposition senator Piedad Córdoba said Thursday.
According to the Liberal Party lawmaker, the human rights problems are a fundamental issue for Obama to establish what kind of relations to have with the United States’ closest ally in Latin America.
“All members of the U.S. Democratic bench who are involved in issues concerning Colombia are people we worked with and who know exactly what we have been doing,” the Senator said.
Obama and his Democratic Party have demanded of Colombia it improved the situation of labor rights workers in Colombia before approving the free trade agreement between the two countries. Colombia’s human rights image has been under even more pressure after the growing scandal of military personnel murdering civilians.
