Colombia’s Prosecutor General says President Uribe can’t guarantee
guerrillas their freedom if they surrender their weapons and hostages
like the President Wednesday reiterated.
According to Prosecutor General Mario Iguarán, a guerrilla can not be promised anything until in the specific case is proven the rebel hasn’t committed crimes against humanity. Grave crimes legally can not be pardoned.
The Prosecutor General had this weekend already spoken against an immediate release of ‘Isaza’, the FARC guerrilla that deserted the FARC and helped former politician Oscar Tulio Lizcano. ‘Isaza’ first had to appear before a court to establish if there weren’t any legal objectives to his release.
After having appeared before court and was cleared of suspicion, the deserter was allowed to leave the country.
Uribe is trying to persuade individual members of the FARC to leave their ranks and surrender their hostages. France has offered to grant political refuge to guerrillas that do so.
