Colombian senator Martha Lucia Ramírez (Partido de la U) wants all
public officials, especially politicians, to undergo a lie detector test
to see if they aren’t corrupt or have ties to drug lords or right wing
paramilitaries.
The senator thinks the rules that are now applied to Colombia’s military should apply to all public officials. A member of the security forces is no longer able to make a promotion without undergoing the lie detector test to see if he’s not been involved in human rights violations.
“Considering what’s happened recently with the extrajudicial executions [by members of the army] is a good reason to require a polygraph test for members of the armed forces to make promotion. For the same reason this should be applied to all public officials, especially members of Congress. They should also be polygraphed before taking possession of their new position,” the senator told the senate’s Second Committee.
“We can not apply to standards in Colombia. A very strict one for some and and great slackness for others,” she added.
