NGO’s will protest in Belgium to demand answers from the Colombian government about forced disappearances occurring in the country.
Amnesty International and the Belgian chapter of Liberty will be protesting in front of the Colombian embassy in the capital Brussels on Friday. They say that they want “clear answers on the scandal of forced disappearances and the apparent impunity enjoyed by perpetrators of such crimes,” reported Univision on Thursday.
“Never explained or sanctioned, enforced disappearance is one of the greatest scandals of the reality of human rights in Colombia,” said the organizations in a joint statement.
They are also asking what assurances the Colombian government has provided to guarantee the activist associations, human rights defenders and trade unionists “the possibility of working in full security.”
The NGO’s claim the official numbers of forced disappearances is around 32,000, of which about 1,130 have been over the last three years. Activists, human rights defenders and trade unionists have been the main targets.
The protesters are particularly concerned about the disappearance of environmental activist Sandra Viviana Cuellar who disappeared in Cali on February 17, 2011.
