Colombian President Alvaro Uribe plans to visit the earthquake-striken nation of Haiti on Sunday, Colombian media reported Thursday.
The conservative president told Union Esterio, a local radio station, “I am trying, if circumstances allow, to visit Haiti on Sunday.”
“All our solidarity goes out to Haiti. What a great tragedy; how much it pains us. The news we get is growing ever worse. We have a very large historic debt to Haiti, and right now we have a duty of solidarity,” he added.
A Colombian airforce plane arrived in Haiti Thursday morning, bringing doctors, medical equipment and food supplies to the Caribbean island, where officials fear the death toll may top 100,000.
Minister of the Interior Fabio Valencia Cossio announced the plane’s arrival in Haiti, having declared earlier in the day that “we start today with an airlift, and with all the resources that our country has available to take to this grand tragedy which is mourned throughout the entire world,” reported El Pais.
