Pope Benedict XVI called for an end to violence in Colombia while leading the outdoor Palm Sunday Mass on St. Peter’s Square in Rome.

The religious leader, speaking before tens of thousands of faithful, said he asks God “how many in this beloved nation have been cruelly deprived of their lives and assets” and renewed his “call for talks, repentance and reconcilliation.”

“No more violence in Colombia, may she be ruled by peace,” the pope continued.

the Catholic Church’s highest member “strongly” urged Colombians to “spiritually” unite and take part in Holy Friday’s day of prayer which will be dedicated to the victims of violence.

Benedict says he is “ardently praying” for a resolution “of these situations that have caused so much pain.”The pope says he hopes Colombia can enjoy a “stable and just peace, in a climate of hope and well-being.”Colombian officials say the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), hold at least 700 hostages, including three US military contractors and French-Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt. Colombian NGO País Libre says another 240 are held captive by the National Liberation Army (ELN).In February, Benedict met with Betancourt’s mother at the Vatican. (AP)
