Close to 100 people clashed with police at the University of Antioquia in Medellin, leaving one officer with an amputated leg.
“In an act of terrorism one of the uniformed anti-riot police was attacked with an explosive device, causing him serious injuries,” read a police press release.
Eyewitnesses reported that a group of hooded men entered the campus early Wednesday afternoon, spreading pamphlets in protest of Colombia’s recent Free Trade Agreement with the United States and the university’s newly-elected president Alberto Uribe Correa.
Soon after, homemade explosives were set off, forcing the police to respond with tear gas.
Ten to fifteen thousand students were evacuated from the campus, and school authorities cancelling Thursday classes.
Medellin’s police commander General Yesid Vasquez requested the assistance of the school’s students to help identify the protesters involved.
