A policeman was left injured on Tuesday following a FARC attack on a police station in western Colombia, according to Caracol Radio.
The Colombian Army has confirmed that the attack, in the municipality of Morales in the western Colombian department of Cauca, is the work of the Jacobo Arenas column of the 6th Front of the FARC, whose headquarters is located in the region.
It is believed the guerrillas entered the town via the sports arena and began their attack on the local police station at 6.15AM Tuesday morning, using automatic weapons and grenades. After 7AM, the attack continued in central Morales, ending only when army troops descended in helicopters and overcame the guerrillas.
According to community spokesmen, the explosions and gunfire were very loud, keeping local residents in their homes until authorities regained control of the situation.
Several houses were damaged in the crossfire, though no citizens were hurt. A single policeman was injured in the attack.
Morales is the municipality in which slain FARC leader Alfonso Cano was located last month, before being tracked and shot dead by the Colombian Army further north in Suarez, Cauca.
