Nearly 150 Colombian pedestrians were killed in traffic in the first two months of 2011, the country’s police announced, attributing many of the deaths to careless behavior.
According to local media, the police said 141 pedestrians have died and 938 have been injured in traffic accidents occurring in less than two months of 2011.
Crossing without paying attention continues to be one of the main causes of pedestrian deaths, said the police. The report attributes this both to the adoption of habits such as talking on a cell phone while crossing, as well as forgetting customs such as “looking both ways before crossing the street.”
On the other hand, of the 141 dead, 55 have died in accidents in which inebriated people were involved.
The reported number of deaths represents a 29% decrease from the same period in 2010.
