Police in Medellin want to impose a curfew for minors in neighborhoods
that have been hit hardest by the wave of assassinations in Colombia’s second
largest city.
The commander of the Metropolitan Police of the Valle de Aburra, Colonel Luis Eduardo Martinez Guzman, will presents his recommendations to make the city more secure to Medellin’s mayor this week.
“If you have to send the whole world to sleep at six in the afternoon, you have to do it. And if you have to close all businesses at six, you have to close them,” Martinez told Caracol Radio, stressing the need to attend to the security situation in the city where more than 1100 people have been killed this year.
According to the Colonel, the areas most affected by crime in Medellin are Castilla and Aranjuez, in the northeast and northwest of the city, and the neighboring municipalities Bello and Itagui.
The murder rate in Medellin has soared since the beginning of 2009. Police presence in the city has been increased several times already this year, so far without significant effect.
