A Colombia police officer was killed by an apparent FARC attack Monday night at a sporting event in the state of Cauca in southwestern Colombia reported Colombian media.

The alleged FARC – Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – attack took place in Buenos Aires, a city in the north of the Cauca state.

The attack was reportedly intended to assassinate Cristian Jimenez, deputy commander of the Buenos Aires police station, said Colonel Ivan Ramiro Perez according to El Pais newspaper. The 14-year veteran officer Jimenez died of his injuries following the attack said Perez.

During the shooting attack a civilian woman was badly injured reported El Pais, and transferred to Cauca’s capital city Cali for treatment.

Colonel Perez added that the attackers used a form of explosive as a diversion to escape following the killing of Jimenez.

Monday night’s deadly attacked followed another double homicide last week in Cauca. Two police officers were killed Friday when FARC allegedly attacked during a morning patrol.
