A car bomb loaded with over 265 pounds of explosives was detonated by police in a central Colombian village Wednesday, reported several media.
The vehicle was stolen on Tuesday from the electric company by suspected FARC rebels and abandoned near the police station in the town of Vegalarga in the Huila department, authorities reported.
Police detonated the car in a controlled manner after evacuating over 2,500 inhabitants.
There were no reports of injuries or deaths but a great deal of damage. The church, the school and about 20 houses have been destroyed, Caracol TV reported.
Sources suggest that the car was stolen and prepared with the bomb by FARC’s 17th Front, who are known to operate in the area.
A similar incident occurred last year when another public vehicle exploded in the same town, killing two and injuring many others.
