Police in the southern Colombian city of Popoyan are advising tourists on how to avoid becoming victims of crime while vacationing in the city, reports El Liberal.
The police visited hotels and common tourist destinations, passing out flyers and speaking to foreign visitors. They told people to always be aware of the security situation of any the city before they go out exploring, and to keep in mind some areas of the city are not safe. Police also warned visitors of Popoyan not to talk on cell phones, take out cameras or video cameras unnecessarily, or visit El Morro in the Caldas neighborhood alone.
Tourists were encouraged to visit police stations to report crimes if they find themselves victims.
December is a high travel season in Colombia, with many visiting for the Christmas holidays. Many Colombian cities have increased the number of police who will add extra security over the holiday season. Bogota will have 22,500 police officers on hand, increasing security in bus terminals and conducting security checkpoints of traffic across the city. Forces in the Antioquia department will aim to prevent and control liquor smuggling, illegal possession of weapons, domestic violence, and drunk driving.
