Despite the government’s refusal to allow Piedad Cordoba to participate in the release of FARC hostage Pablo Emilio Moncayo, the opposition senator will meet with U.S. ambassador to Colombia William Brownfield Tuesday. They will discuss the possibility of the U.S.’s involvement in negotiations.
Cordoba, the leader of activist group ‘Colombians for Peace’ said that there were several options to discuss, “but we must wait to see how we can move forward”.
According to W Radio, “sources close to the liberal leader” say that Cordoba’s plan is to make the best contacts possible in order to break the negotiations deadlock. W Radio said that the senator will also meet with Ombudsman Vólmar Pérez Wednesday to “seek support from national humanitarian organizations”.
The release of the hostage the FARC promised to
surrender became deadlocked after the Colombian government rejected the
involvement of Cordoba, who the guerrillas
insist to be involved.
Moncayo,a soldier in the Colombian army, was kidnapped by the FARC over eleven years ago.
Cordoba and Brownfield will meet at the U.S. Embassy in Bogota.
