A neurologist at the Marly Clinic in Bogota, where Colombia’s Vice President Angelino Garzon was transferred Tuesday, said physicians are waiting for the results of several cerebrovascular tests to determine the severity of the politician’s condition.
Garzon was hospitalized Friday after coming in for routine tests. He was sent to an intensive care unit after reports surfaced that he suffered cerebrovascular complications.
“After some tests were performed on Angelino Garzon, we determined the need for constant monitoring and rigorous testing and therefore he will remain hospitalized in the intensive care unit for this purpose,” read a statement on the vice president’s official website.
Dr. Mario Munoz said that the vice president could potentially suffer damage to his memory and vision, which would require a long recovery period, although doctors would not make any diagnosis until test results were available. He said that hospital staff would continue to closely monitor Garzon to avoid any complications.
President Juan Manuel Santos wished his colleague a quick recovery in a statement from Mexico, where he attended the G20 summit. “Physicians have imparted a sense of calm. All vital signs are good and we will continue to watch and, of course, wish you a speedy recovery.”
