The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said Wednesday there is no threat for a tsunami on Colombia’s coasts after a 7.6 earthquake hit Costa Rica.
While including Colombia’s Pacific region in its initial alert, the “warning area is reduced” and “cancelled for … Colombia,” the warning center said in a bulletin half an hour after the earthquake.
Local authorities in the west of Colombia did meet out of precaution and coastal authorities were called to immediately monitor the Pacific Ocean, said Colombia’s Disaster Prevention and Attention chief Carlos Ivan Marquez.
The earthquake forcing the tsunami alert hit close to Samara, a coastal area on the Pacific some 100 miles from Costa Rican capital San Jose.
According to news agency Reuters, the earthquake rattled buildings and cut power in some parts of the capital.
