Colombia news - Itagui win

Newly promoted Itagui Ditaires delivered a big upset on Sunday by beating Independiente Medellin 2-1. Atletico Huila meanwhile, earned a hard-fought win at Millonarios.

Itagui Ditaires had nothing to lose in their opening game with highly-favored Medellin, but could not have wished for a better start as Emerson Chamorro put the hosts in the lead in the very first minute.

Jorge Aguirre doubled the advantage in the 40th minute and although Jaime Castrillon pulled one back five minutes later, Medellin failed to turn things around in the remaining half.

Atletico Huila had a tough day at Millonarios, going a goal down on two occasions. Rafael Robayo’s early goal was cancelled out by Jorge Vidal in the 24th minute, but Carlos Preciado restored the hosts’ lead nine minutes later.

Huila fought back in the second half however as Jose Moreno converted a penalty in the 68th minute before netting the winner with seven minutes to go, 3-2.

Envigado surprised Atletico Nacional by beating their regional rivals 3-2 in an away game. Luis Mosquera and Neider Morantes (2) scored for the winning side, while Dorlan Pabon and Carlos Renteria found the target for Nacional.

In the day’s remaining games, Deportes Quindio beat America de Cali 2-0 while Cucuta Deportivo secured a 2-1 win at Deportivo Cali.

Real Cartagena lead the league after its opening round of fixtures, followed by Deportes Quindio and Atletico Huila.
