New York, New York, came alive this summer and fall with Colombian cumbia music in Brooklyn bars, concert halls, and even the great Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), reported newspaper El Espectador Thursday.
Epic Colombian band Bomba Estereo played Manhattan on Wednesday at the Le Poisson Rouge concert hall for hundreds of fans of their music that combines electronica, rock, reggae, and of course- cumbia. The band’s vocalist Liliana Saumet yelled “New York, keep it alive, fire, don’t let it go out,” to the multitude jamming on the dance floor at the band’s concert.
Bomba Estereo is on a tour of the United States, at a time where cumbia is beginning to expand and reach the highest of heights in New York City and the world beyond. NBC New York described the band “comprised of Mejia, on bass and beats, Kike Egurrola on drums, Julian Salazar on Guitar and Liliana Saumet on lead vocals, [that has] made the rounds at the Latin American Music Conference, SXSW, Bonnaroo, Bumbershoot, and countless of other festivals supporting Blow Up (Nacional Records)” with massivly rave reviews. The band will continue their tour of the United States through the midwest and south throughout the rest of the month of September.
This summer, the prestigious MoMA presented a series of live music concerts in their garden which included the featured Colombian band Frente Cumbiero. The museum had commissioned Oliver Conan, a French musician based in Brooklyn who is a huge promoter of Cumbia in New York, as their concert organizer.
