Colombia’s Deputy Prosecutor General resigned yesterday, following the official resignation of Viviane Morales, possibly leaving surprise choice Martha Lucia Zamora to fill the void.
Wilson Alejandro Martinez’s resignation was confirmed on the official website of the prosecutor general’s office and came just as he was due to take over from Morales, who was removed from office last week over her improper election to the post.
Following Morales’ official resignation and withdrawal from any future candidacy for the post, Martinez also stepped down, just three days after Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos told a press conference that Martinez would temporarily take on the role pending the election of a new Prosecutor General.
With Zamora expected to step in to Martinez’s role, she would effectively take on the role of interim Prosecutor General, therefore taking responsibility for pursuing ongoing prosecutions.
Zamora previously served as advisor to the office of the Prosecutor General, as well as assistant judge to the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court.
Seemingly confirming her appointment, Zamora told W Radio, “Following the resignation of Deputy Prosecutor General Wilson Alejandro Martinez, Dr Viviane Morales told me I was going to be appointed. I thanked her for the vote of confidence and accepted immediately.”
At the time of the interview Zamora’s appointment has not been officially announced by the presidential palace.
