The Nevado del Ruiz volcano remains “unstable,” with an eruption “probable” in the coming days or weeks, according to the Colombian Geological Survey (SGC), reported weekly Semana.
The statement came as the SGC maintained the volcano’s alert level at orange, after a column of gas and steam approximately 1,200 meters tall extended from its crater on Sunday.
The alert level was raised from yellow to orange on March 31, amid increased seismic activity, while last week it briefly reached red alert level.
The Nevado del Ruiz volcano last erupted in 1985, wiping out the town of Armero and killing 25,000 people.
