Colombia’s National Police reportedly stopped 1,388 drunk drivers yesterday during the Dia de la Raza holiday, the Colombian equivalent of Columbus Day in the United States.
Drunk driving has been an increasingly publicized problem in the country, after several dramatic incidents this summer sparked calls for legal reform and crackdowns.
So far, the national government has not announced any comprehensive measures to address the problem, though random checkpoints have become a more common tactic on a national level.
According to reported statistics, nearly 3 million cars took to the roads for the holiday weekend. Despite this, the number of car accidents was 64% less than on Dia de la Raza in 2012.
