More than 750 pedestrians have already been killed in traffic accidents in 2011, the director of transit police said Sunday.
In an interview with Caracol Radio, police official Rodolfo Palomino said that although the number has dropped nearly 20%, down to 777 from 950 people killed in the same period of 2010, the rate of deaths still alarms Palomino. He also announced that 4,613 people have also been injured in accidents, a less than 5% decrease from last year.
“It requires a responsible attitude to further decrease the numbers, that they always use pedestrian bridges, the crosswalks, try not to wander in a drunken state. The recommendation is that all actors of the road try each time to travel with greater compliance to the traffic rules,” advised Palomino.
The transit director also explained that more than 20% of the deaths occurred in Bogota.
