Ongoing fighting between the Colombian army and the FARC in the southern department of Cauca left one civilian seriously injured and forced 150 to abandon their homes, reports human rights NGO CODHES.
According to reports, the confrontations between the leftist guerrillas and government forces took place over the weekend in town of Caloto, leaving a farmer seriously wounded. He was reportedly transferred to a hospital in the city of Cali for medical attention.
Meanwhile, the authorities discovered a plan by FARC guerrillas to infiltrate the civilian population of Caloto and assassinate members of the police and army using small arms, said police chief General Oscar Naranjo.
Naranjo explained that the FARC have also been using snipers to harass the army in the area.
Heavy fighting between Colombian authorities and FARC guerrillas have left many civilians dead recently.
On Friday, the civilian death toll rose to three, and amount of injured rose to thirteen, including three children, following battles between the Colombian army and the FARC in the Cauca village of Tacueyo.
