Former presidential candidate Antanas Mockus said Tuesday he wants his fellow Green Party member Enrique Peñalosa to choose between him and former President Alvaro Uribe, who has repeatedly supported Peñalosa to run for Bogota mayor in October.
According to Mockus, he does not want to support the same candidate as Uribe, regarding “all that has happened recently with revelations about problematic behaviour” of people close to the former President, referring to the increasing amount of investigations and convictions against Uribe aides for corruption, wiretapping government opponents and links with paramilitary death squads.
“I do not see myself on the same stage as former President Alvaro Uribe … I try to adapt, but I can’t,” Mockus told Congress.
Uribe reiterated his support for the Green Party candidate Tuesday, saying that Peñalosa is “the most convenient option” for the capital to succeed the suspended Samuel Moreno after October’s elections.
Mockus and Peñalosa have both served as Bogota mayor before.
