Former Bogota mayor and former presidential candidate Antanas Mockus on Wednesday officially registered to run for a third term as the capital’s chief executive.
The excentric scholar, who was Bogota’s mayor from 1995 till 1997 and from 2001 till 2003, will be supported by the Independent Social Alliance and challenge Enrique Peñalosa, also a former mayor, and socialist Gustavo Petro, who have been leading the polls leading up to the October elections.
Mockus, as leader of the Green Party made it to the second round of the 2010 presidential elections, which he lost to President Juan Manuel Santos.
After former President Alvaro Uribe decided to support Peñalosa, also of the Green Party, Mockus decided to leave the party and rumors arose that he would be running for the country’s second most important job himself.
