Colombian soccer ace and Seattle Sounders forward, Fredy Montero, makes the move back to his native country where he will play for the Bogota-based and Liga Postobon 2012 champions, Millonarios.
Montero, who started his career in the ranks of Deportivo Cali, has played for the Seattle Sounders since 2009 where he soon became the team’s highest scorer. He also has four caps for his national team, Colombia, during which he has scored four goals.
Sounders fans have had time to come to terms with the loss of their star player, however, as the deal has been in the pipelines since December of 2012.
“Fredy has been a fantastic player and pro for Sounders FC over our first four years,” Adrian Hanauer, part owner and general manager of the club told The Seattle Times.
“We wish Fredy the best of success with Millonarios as he continues to develop as a player. We hope this move helps Fredy’s chances of being called up to the Colombian national team, as he has certainly earned it,” Hanauer concluded.
At a price tag of $4.5 million, Millonarios will have Montero for six months with the possibility of extending the loan if both the Bogota squad and the Sounders agree.
