Medellin gang leader “El Cebollero” claimed Thursday to have evidence that he gave money to a previous political campaign of Anibal Gaviria, now a candidate for Medellin mayor.
In an interview with W Radio, the convicted former leader of the Oficina de Envigado drug gang, Alirio de Jesus Rendon alias “El Cebollero,” claimed that he and the liberal candidate once had “a very close relationship.”
“El Cebollero” claims that he gave money to support the political campaign of Anibal Gaviria during the time that the gang leader worked at the wholesale markets of Medellin. According to the convicted drug gang leader, whose alias means “the onion seller” in English, 95% of the politicians of Antioquia pass through the central wholesale markets where “El Cebollero” used to work.
“El Cebollero” claims to be very disappointed that the politician is now denying their relationship, saying that Gaviria should have “the courage, bravery, professionalism and transperancy to tell the country that he knew me.” “El Cebollero,” who maintains his innocence, claims that the lack of support has been “sad and humiliating.”
El Cebollero was sentenced to four years and two months in prison in March 2010 for conspiracy to commit crimes, as well as for financing and forming a part of a criminal drug gang.
