The Copa Libertadores has come to an end for Colombian side Independiente Medellin following a 1-0 defeat at Corinthians.
In advance, things were not looking too good for Leonel Alvarez’ men. In order to make it to the next stage, the team needed a win at Corinthians and for Racing Club to drop points at Cerro Porteño.
And even that scenario would not have offered any guarantee as Medellin would still have to finish among the top six runners-up.
The only part that went well for Medellin was Racing Club’s goalless draw at Cerro Porteño, but the Colombians ended up losing 1-0 themselves, thereby ending their continental campaign.
The only goal of the match in Sao Paulo was in fact an own goal from Juan Valencia in the 23rd minute.
Colombia does still have one team in the Copa Libertadores as 2004 winners Once Caldas did advance.
