Independiente Medellin still have a small chance of making it to the next round of the Copa Libertadores after a 1-0 win over Cerro Porteño on Thursday.
Both teams went into this match without having won a single game, though Medellin were a little better off with three points, while Paraguayan side Cerro had just one.
The only goal of the match, played at Medellin’s Atanasio Girardot stadium, came from Luis Arias in the 56th minute. To make matters worse for the away team, Rodrigo Burgos was sent off eight minutes after the hour.
Medellin remain in third place in Group 1 but the gap with second-placed Racing Club is now just one point. Racing do have next week’s home games with Corinthians in hand.
If Racing fail to win that match, Medellin will need to beat Corinthians in their final match while Racing drop points in their final group game with Cerro Porteño. If Racing do beat their Brazilian opponents on April 14th, Medellin will no longer be in contention.
