The President of the Supreme Court, Judge Humberto Camilo Tarquin, has announced that, despite previous reports, Mario Uribe will not be investigated for crimes against humanity.
According to media on Tuesday, the Judge said, “If one reads the body of the sentence and its operative part, no part of it states that Dr. Mario Uribe will be investigate for crimes against humanity.”
Uribe, a former Senate president and the cousin of former President Alvaro Uribe, was sentenced on Monday to seven years and six months in prison for his ties with paramilitaries while in office.
Judge Camilo pointed to the testimony of former AUC leader Salvatore Manusco and Uribe’s stark rise in votes during the 2002 legislative elections as being the two main pieces of incriminating evidence.
He added that the decision handed down by the Supreme Court was unanimous and no with possibility of appeal.
