Man tries to shoot himself after wife refuses to buy rum

A man in a north Colombian village tried to shoot himself because his wife refused to give him money to buy more rum, local media reported Thursday.

The incident reportedly happened in a farm outside the village of Betulia on Tuesday evening.

According to newspaper El Universal, the 35-year old Omar Jose de la Ossa first shot himself with a .47 shotgun, after his wife refused to give him money to continue his drinking binge.

The man failed to critically injure himself, but was taken to hospital with considerable burn injuries on his chest and left arm.

Local police, alarmed by the gunshot, went to the house and confiscated the rifle.
