An explosion in the central Colombian city of Neiva has left one person dead.
According to local media, the explosion occured one block away from the Eustasio Jose Rivera convention center in the Huila department’s capital city.
The incident resulted in the death of one local homeless person who had apparently picked up the explosive device made up of 1.1 pounds of ammonium nitrate.
RCN Radio also reported that the bomb caused damage to the immediate area surrounding the explosion site.
The authorities suspect armed criminal gangs to be responsible for planting the bomb in attempt to attack local businesses. However this has not been confirmed and investigations are continuing.
Colombian rebel group FARC has a history of operating in Neiva and were allegedly responsible for similar attacks on the city earlier in 2010, when three bombs exploded there in five days.
