Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was born in Colombia and consequently impeded to be head of state, said that country’s opposition Monday.
In an interview with CNN Español, opposition figure Pablo Medina alleged that Maduro was born in the Colombian border city of Cucuta and consequently a Colombian citizen.
Medina presented a letter to the European Union asking them to scrutinize Maduro’s nationality and take a position on the matter because, according to Medina, other governments “should know that any contracts or any agreements that they sign with Nicolas Maduro, a Colombian citizen, are invalid, illegal, null and void,” he was quoted as saying by CNN.
Also inside Venezuela, the allegations have caused situations similar to those faced by US President Barack Obama who faced similar accusations and was forced to reveal his birth certificate to prove the “birthers” he was American.
Maduro, who has frequently said to be a Caracas-native, so far neglected to show his birth certificate while his supporters call the claims “nonsense,” reported CNN.
Venezuela’s opposition has refused to accept the results of presidential elections earlier this year that were won by Maduro, but were stained by fraud allegations expressed by his opponent Henrique Capriles, who lost the elections with a minimal difference.
