Liga Postobon: Millonarios and La Equidad advance to semi finals

The city of Bogota is certain to have one team in the final of the Liga Postobon after both Millonarios and La Equidad advanced to the semi finals on Sunday.

Millonarios beat Once Caldas 1-0 in their home leg on Thursday, but knew that the one goal deficit would not be enough to sit back in Manizales three days later.

Once Caldas, forced to attack, indeed scored the opening goal through Wason Renteria after 21 minutes of play at Palogrande stadium.

But Millonarios avoided further damage and a penalty shoot-out was needed to determine which team advanced to the next round.

Once Caldas goalscorer Renteria was less successful from the spot, and became the first player to miss a penalty at a 4-3 score in the shoot-out. This proved not to be fatal however as Juan Dominguez had the following spot kick saved as well.

But with Millonarios leading the shoot-out 6-5, Alexis Henriquez blew his strike wide of the goal and as such ended the series in favor of the visiting side.

Meanwhile, La Equidad also had a 1-0 lead to defend in their return leg at Envigado, who drew first blood through Jorge Serna in the 44th minute to level the tie.

But just a minute later, Hanyer Mosquera made it 1-1 (2-1 on aggregate). His goal turned out to be enough to have La Equidad advance to the semi finals.

Millonarios and La Equidad now face each other in the semi finals. Millonarios host the first game on June 5th, and the second match takes place at La Equidad’s home ground three days later.
