Colombia’s Liberal Party condemned the Sunday assassination of two of their candidates for the city council of a southern town, near the Ecuadorean border.
In a press statement on the political party’s website, leader Rafael Pardo said that he “regrets the loss of these active members of the collectivity, who at the time of their death were preparing their election campaign.”
Pardo called on authorities to “provide security guarantees to all citizens of different political parties in all parts of the country that have come forward for next October’s local elections.”
The double homicide on the two candidates of the city council of Valle del Guamuez, a town 15 miles north of the Ecuadorean border, is the first registered act of violence related to the local and regional elections to be held later this year.
