Danny Glover, star of the epic “Lethal Weapon” franchise and Steven Spielberg classic “The Color Purple,” is scheduled to arrive in Colombia on Sunday as a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador.
The 65-year-old actor and activist is the first Unicef ambassador to visit the country, and will evaluate two of the organization’s programs in Cartagena and Medellin.
In Cartagena, Glover will visit Unicef workers attempting to combat child prostitution – a big problem in the coastal city.
In Medellin he will attend a young people’s soccer tournament which is part of a peace project supported by Unicef.
He will end his trip with a press conference in Bogota to talk about what he has seen in the Latin American nation, and stress the need for Colombia to protect its children and adolescents – who make up 34% of the country’s population.
Glover has been a lifelong activist, from opposition to the Vietnam war through to Iraq, and heavy involvement in civil and union rights, education and progressive development policies. Earlier this year he won the Freedom Award, a U.S. prize which honors supporters of civil rights who have a strong influence on their communities.
