Colombia’s presidential candidate Antanas Mockus and Juan Manuel Santos on Sunday ended their election campaigns and will from Monday be prohibited from publicly promoting their parties before the country’s election on June 20.
Santos, candidate for the political party Partido de la U, spent his last day of electioneering rallying in Colombia’s second largest city Medellin, in the Palacio de Exposiciones arena.
The candidate told thousands of his supporters, “May nobody sleep. May nobody lower the flags for a single minute. Let’s build up the vote. Let us multiply this support so that on June 20 we advance towards work and towards prosperity.”
Mockus, who is running for Colombia’s Green Party, spent Sunday campaigning door-to-door in Bogota neighborhoods of Suba, Engativa, Tunjuelito and Kennedy.
“Knocking on doors we can reach the citizens that maybe wouldn’t vote for us, or they would simply abstain from doing it, or they would vote for a different candidate,” said the Green Party candidate.
“We’re not closing the campaign,” said the candidate, “we’re opening doors.”
The two candidates will next weekend go head-to-head in the second round of the country’s national elections. Candidate Juan Manuel Santos, who gained the most votes in the first round of elections, is currently leading in voter polls.
