Weather phenomenon “La Niña,” blamed for the torrential rains that killed hundreds and affected millions in Colombia since last year, has ended, the country’s President Juan Manuel Santos said Saturday.
According to the President, the Colombian meteorological institute confirmed that temperatures of the Pacific waters have normalized, but warned that there may still be heavy rains for a few weeks.
“[Meteorological institute] IDEAM has officially announced the temperatures of the tropical Pacific, of the waters of the tropical Pacific, have normalized What this means? That the ‘La Niña’ phenomenon is over,” Santos said during a visit to Colombia’s third largest city, Cali.
Because rains can still cause floods and landslides in the coming weeks “we can not lower our guard,” said the president.
