Judge orders arrest of Cordoba governor

colombia news - marta saenz

A judge orders the arrest of the governor of the Cordoba department, Marta Saenz, for failing to make payments to teachers in the department ordered by a court, reports El Heraldo.

According to the judge, Saenz failed to comply with a ruling that required her to pay the salaries and social benefits of a group of teachers from Puerto Escondido from 2002.

The teachers brought the case to the court in 2009, demanding the payment of outstanding salaries and social benefits owed.

The original ruling was in favor of the department of Cordoba. However, it was soon overturned as it was deemed that the teachers had a right to a living wage, social security and timely payment of wages.

The governor could now be arrested and detained for five days in a DAS facility if the order is carried out.

Saenz stated that she is ready to serve her time but not to comply with this most recent ruling.

Speaking to RCN radio, Saenz said that this is an effort to demonize her open and committed work to fighting corruption.

“I don’t know what the judges are going to do with me. I only hope that they understand the good work I have carried out,” she said.

An announcement on her fate is expected later on Tuesday.

This order coincidentally comes after Saenz took action against the mayor of Ure in the Cordoba department following an order from a Bogota court.

The mayor, Bladimir Londoño, is now being investigated for the crime of falsifying public documents and embezzlement.
