Colombian winger Juan Guillermo Cuadrado dislocated his shoulder Sunday in a game with club side Fiorentina, according to an announcement made by team doctors Monday.
Cuadrado went down early in the second half of Sunday’s match against Cagliari after crashing into Nadja Nainggolan.
In subsequent examinations, doctors diagnosed a second-degree dislocation in his shoulder, ruling him out of competition during a recovery period estimated to last at least three weeks.
The injury could keep Cuadrado out of Colombia’s next and final round of World Cup Qualifiers, with games against Chile and Paraguay scheduled for early October.
Cuadrado, a regular first-substitute for head coach Jose Nestor Pekerman, had been making a case for a starting spot on the ‘Tricolor’ side over the course of Colombia’s last several rounds of Qualifiers before Sunday’s incident.
It has yet to be announced whether he will join international teammate Macnelly Torres at Colombia’s Barranquilla headquarters for rehab, but Cuadrado’s injury is now the second in the past week to strike the Colombian midfield, which looked out of sorts in the team’s most recent loss to Uruguay.
